Bread is at the core of what we do. In keeping with our authentic approach to baking, Blacksburg Bagels makes an effort to recreate all the breads you love and a few you have yet to meet!  Through careful recipe research and a lot of trial and error we bake much more than just bagels. Seasonal breads, international specialties, and even a few of our own original inventions.

Sourdough bread baking is a time old tradition that uses starters, natural yeast and bacteria present in the air around us, instead of store bought yeast. We bake our sourdoughs from cultures that we have started and maintain ourselves. We caught our original two starters here in Blacksburg. One is gluten free (based on teff and brown rice flour) and the other regular. In the summer of 2016 we caught a culture in Point Judith, Rhode Island. In addition to our own captures we also have adopted a culture from San Fransisco started by our friend :).

Dinner rolls

Our dinner rolls use the same base as our bagels. We boil them to give them a nice crust and bake them on trays. The traditional cross cut tops make it east to break them open and dig in!

The ‘holey Italian slipper’ is a big favorite around town.   Our smaller sized ciabatta are the perfect size for burgers and sandwiches. They also make a dinner bread since the highly irregular bubbly crumb is perfect for soaking up sauces.

Bread bowls

Bread bowls are a wonderful way to make sure that you have enough bread to dip into your soup.  Our bowls can be baked to suit your needs and can hold hot or cold soups in volumes as small as 4 oz and as large as 16oz. TH are available in many varieties so please share your full menu with us so we can help you determine a good pairing.

Are a classic French bread shaped sort of like a long baseball bat.  In contrast though it isn’t use for hitting things. Instead it’s guaranteed to make your meal a hit!  Also available in non traditional sizes for use as sandwich bread, dinner rolls, or bread sticks.

Potato Rolls

One of the Pie Guy’s personal favorites are the potato rolls. Their soft texture and mild flavor make them perfect for any sandwich, hot dog, or burger you can put on them.  Typically we bake a dinner roll/bun sized bread but they also lend well to other shapes as well.

Sandwich Loaves

There’s a great variety of options for breads when you want a sandwich.  Let us know what you’d like and we’ll make it happen.  All loaves are made in traditional sizes appropriate for your average sandwich.  Some of the varieties we’ve done already are pumpernickel, rye, whole wheat, and good ol fashioned white bread.
